9.5.4 Side Effects

It might be tempting to assume that medication side effects always have negative effects on adherence. However, actually the amount of irritation that patients experienced in acne clinical trials has shown no association with their dropout rate, suggesting that patients do not experience irritation negatively if they think it is related to symptom improvement [37]. Framing the expected side effect properly can involve telling patients, “You may experience some irritation; that’s a sign the treatment is working.” Beneficial side effects, such as possible weight loss from the diuretic spironolactone, can also be emphasized. These examples show that the meaning of side effects can be highly subjective, and physicians can greatly influence their patients’ interpretation of reality in a way that improves adherence [38].
